Government, MAC fund enviro study

The federal government, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) and four provinces (British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick) are collaborating in an attempt to identify economical ways to monitor the environmental impact of mining.

Government will contribute $2.2 million and MAC will provide $1.2 million to the 4-year Aquatic Effects Technology Evaluation Program. Three main areas will be explored: acute and chronic toxicity testing methods; biological monitoring methods in receiving waters; and water- and sediment-monitoring methods.

The program is intended to help the industry monitor environmental effects affordably and help the environment by evaluating monitoring technologies.
