Preliminary drilling at the Eagle Mountain project in central Guyana, 80 km west of the Omai gold mine, is returning significant gold grades for Golden Star Resources (GSR-X).
Drilling at the Kilroy zone, the main target, encountered significant mineralization in 18 of 19 holes. In all, the company completed 27 holes in a 2,400-metre program. The program tested geochemical anomalies that were identified following the collection of 5,000 surface, soil, deep auger and trench samples.
The 750-by-200-metre Kilroy zone is the largest of those anomalies.
Highlights from the drilling include:
* 28 metres grading 3.8 grams gold per tonne in hole 3;
* 19 metres of 3.5 grams in hole 5;
* 26 metres of 2.6 grams in hole 6; and
* 13 metres of 2.7 grams in hole 8.
According to the company, the deposit contains at least 4 million tonnes grading 1.4 grams gold. That inventory comprises 2 million tonnes of saprolite and 2 million tonnes of transitional material between the saprolite and unweathered rock.
To date, the company has identified four stacked collapse breccia zones hosted within, or along, the margins of a granodiorite unit intruding mafic volcanic rocks. Golden Star believes the mineralization, alteration and structural features suggest that Eagle Mountain contains a polymetallic porphyry system.
Drilling at the Millionaire, Minnehaha and No. 1 Hill zones recovered lower-grade mineralization averaging 0.5 gram per tonne.
The company has given greater priority to the property as a result of these encouraging intercepts. Additional drilling is planned for next year.
Golden Star is searching for additional saprolite mineralization to supply the mill at its 30%-owned Omai gold mine. Cambior (CBJ-T) owns a 65% interest in that operation and acts as operator.
