Two ambitious exploration programs in the greenstones east of Night Hawk Lake, about 50 km east of Timmins, Ont., appear to be paying off for Cross Lake Minerals (CRN-V), East West Resource (EWR-V) and Canadian Golden Dragon Resources (CGG-V).
The first program, on a property extending north-south across Sheraton and Timmins twps., is managed by Cross Lake, which owns the property outright.
Here, induced-polarization (IP) anomalies were recently tested by three diamond drill holes, which intersected disseminated pyrite with some copper, zinc, gold and silver.
Two of the holes encountered what the company describes as “low geochemical values” in the base and precious metals, while the third cut a series of zones mineralized with base metal sulphides. In the third hole, an upper copper zone, hosted in rhyolite breccia with strong chloritic alteration, yielded assays of 3.04% copper over 1 metre and 6.88% copper over 0.24 metre, with associated gold and silver. The rhyolite is also strongly depleted in sodium, indicating strong hydrothermal activity.
A series of zinc zones, deeper in the hole, was intersected over a 32-Metre interval in pyrite-rich tuffs with interbedded cherty layers. Samples of 1-Metre lengths graded 1.16% to 5.01% zinc and 1.2 to 31 grams silver per tonne, together with low gold grades.
Beyond the zinc zones, the hole intersected three copper-bearing zones grading 0.2 to 25 grams silver and low concentrations of gold. The IP anomalies tested by these three holes are part of a series extending over a 1.4-km strike length. Further drilling is scheduled for this week.
The second program is managed by Golden Knight Resources (GKR-T) on a 102-sq.-km land package covering parts of Sheraton, Thomas, Macklem and Bond twps., immediately north of the Sheraton-Timmins property. Golden Knight is spending $1 million on exploration to earn a 50% interest in the property; currently Cross Lake and East West each hold 40%, and Golden Dragon holds 20%.
The same IP features outlined on Sheraton-Timmins appear to extend on to this property, including one where three of five holes recently drilled by Golden Knight intersected copper mineralization. In one hole, a 12.8-Metre intersection showed concentrations of copper, gold and silver, with a 3-Metre interval in that length grading 1.87% copper.
A hole 400 metres to the northeast carried a 5-Metre intersection grading 0.68% copper and a 3-Metre intersection with 0.56% (both contain higher-grade intervals). Another hole, 100 metres southwest of the first, cut seven intersections grading 0.2% to 0.61% copper over lengths of 3 to 10 metres.
Farther east, another drill hole intersected a 10-Metre zone of zinc and lead mineralization, with grades of up to 0.64% zinc and 0.19% lead in cherty sediments. Near the mineralized intersection, high concentrations of copper and molybdenum and the presence of quartz-porphyry dykes suggest potential for a volcanogenic sulphide deposit.
More IP surveys are under way, after which Golden Knight will resume drilling.
The three junior companies also hold a property to the south of Sheraton-Timmins, where Royal Oak Mines (RYO-T) is earning an interest.
