Goldcorp to triple production at its Red Lake gold operation

With development drilling indicating substantial new reserves, Goldcorp (TSE) will increase annual production at its mine in Red Lake, Ont., to 150,000 from 50,000 oz.

Kilborn Engineering Pacific estimates Goldcorp will have to invest $15 million to reach the proposed rate. A mill circuit will be installed to handle refractory sulphide ores, perhaps by means of bioleaching or autoclaving.

The mill will be expanded to handle 770 tonnes per day, with about 310 tonnes contributed by the new, high-grade zones below the mine’s 30 Level. The new millhead grade is expected to double to 19 grams per tonne, comparable with the grade at Toronto-listed Placer Dome’s Campbell mine next door.

Goldcorp plans to test the lateral and vertical extensions of the high-grade quartz-carbonate zones at the 37 level.
