Canadian gold miner Goldcorp (G-T, GG-N) has become the latest corporate partner to sign on with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind’s (CNIB) Eye Van program. The vision health project, also known as CNIB’s Ontario Medical Mobile Eye Care Clinic, provides eye care to remote communities in northern Ontario.

Goldcorp, which donated $10,000 dollars to the project, has several projects in northern Ontario, including the Porcupine mine and its prolific Red Lake mine.

Battling the lack of eye health facilities in the remote region, the Eye Van program consists of two CNIB staff nurses driving a 48-ft. transport truck and trailer. The nurses set up temporary clinics in 30 towns every year, including mining communities, and with a rotating team of 25 opthamologists that do one-week stints at the temporary clinics, diagnose eye conditions and provide eye care and minor surgery where necessary.

Each year, the Eye Van travels more than 6,000 km and sees more than 5,000 patients.
