Goldcorp cuts more gold in Red Lake

Toronto-listed Goldcorp has intersected high-grade gold values around existing zones at its Red Lake mine in northwestern Ontario.

Twenty-five holes were drilled in five areas around known mineralization, nine of which resulted in intersections with uncut assay grades in excess of 2 oz. gold per ton over widths measuring from 5.3 to 16.3 ft.

On the 30 level, drilling was completed on the western part of the property in the West Rehab drift near the boundary of the Campbell and Red Lake mines. Drilling was also completed southeast of the No. 2 shaft, where previous drilling had intersected the high-grade and sulphide zones, and farther east of the high-grade zones.

Additional drilling was completed in the eastern portion of the mine, between the 30 and 34 levels and below the 34 level.

Five of the high-grade holes were drilled below the 34 level and cut an oreshoot more than 130 ft. long, varying in width from 5.3 to 16.3 ft. The best assay ran 20.13 oz. over 16.3 ft.

Elsewhere on the 30 level, drilling was completed near the Campbell-Goldcorp property boundary. One previously completed hole, which returned an assay of 8.94 oz. over 1 ft., had additional assay results still pending. When all the results where tabulated, the zone averaged 0.49 oz. over 25.8 ft.

Farther east on the 30 level, three holes were completed in a new drift south of the number 2 shaft. The first hole cut a quartz carbonate zone that averaged 2.52 oz. over 7.4 ft. Assay results from the two remaining holes are still pending; however, visual inspections of one hole indicate it cut two zones measuring 8 to 10 ft., which were estimated to run around 0.4 oz.

Farther still to the east, Goldcorp drove a 60-ft. crosscut to examine a footwall structure which previously assayed up to 1.75 oz. over 8 ft. The 30-846-2 subdrift cut a 65-ft.-long oreshoot that averaged 3.2 oz. over an average width of 13.9 ft.

With the latest drill results, Goldcorp has traced the favorable, altered ultramafic horizon for 2,800 ft.

In addition to infill drilling in the area southeast of the No. 2 shaft, the company will drill and drift in the West Rehab area and around the 30-846-2 subdrift. The company is also driving a crosscut on the 34 and 37 levels in order to test the downdip extensions of the sulphide and high-grade zones, southeast of the No. 2 shaft. Goldcorp intends to drift westward from the 37 level crosscut to chase the down-plunge extensions of the ore zones found in Placer Dome’s (TSE) neighboring Campbell mine.

Finally, Goldcorp intends to explore the upper levels of the mine on the eastern portion of the property.
