After graduation from technical school, he supplemented his qualifications for an operating role in mining with engineering studies. This, coupled with years of practical experience both in operations and management, and the good fortune of having some excellent mentors, certainly provided expertise and background for this job.
Prior to his position in the Placer Dome organization in 1970, Brown had a career in mine construction, operating and management. He was employed by the Noranda Group for more than 20 years and had worked for several years in Colombia, South America.
His work with the broadly-based Placer organization included stints at Craigmont Mines at Merritt, B.C., Marcopper Mining Corp. in the Philippines, Equity Silver at Houston, B.C. and Minera Real de Angeles in Mexico prior to joining Gibraltar in January, 1988 as plant superintendent. He was appointed the company’s mine manager in August of that same year.
