Mining equipment companies from various countries are preparing to head to Ghana to explore opportunities being presented by that country’s resurgent mining industry.
The focus of their attention is the Second West African International Mining Exhibition. Also known as WAM ’96, the show will be held at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre in Accra, from July 9 to 12.
A 2-day conference, Mining in West Africa: Investment Opportunities for the 21st Century, will be held in conjunction with the exhibition.
At 1994’s inaugural show, about 30% of the exhibition space was taken up by South African companies or their local agents. This year, they will be joined by more than 30 firms from Great Britain, as well as their counterparts from North America, Australia, the rest of Europe, the Middle East and some African nations.
Their collective aim is to gain a slice of Ghana’s booming mining industry, which, last year, created export earnings of more than US$500 million. Mining has become the lynchpin of Ghana’s economic recovery, and is the major source of foreign investment. For example, mine development has taken over cocoa exports as the major source of foreign exchange.
