Geophysics reunion planned at U of T

Former students, faculty, associates and friends of geophysics at the University of Toronto are invited to attend a reunion Nov. 2-4 marking the sesquicentennial of the discipline’s study at the university. The weekend activities will include a display of magnetometers dating from the 19th century to the present.

Toronto was the site of one of three magnetic observatories established by the Royal Society of London in 1840, the other two locations being St. Helena and the Cape of Good Hope.

The original Toronto observatory stood on the U of T campus east of the original McLennan Physics building, now the Sanford Fleming building. Constructed of logs with copper nails and built by the Royal Engineers, the observatory was one of the first scientific establishments in Upper Canada.
