General News & Comments New Ontario mines minister

Rene Fontaine, who resigned about a year ago under a conflict-of- interest cloud as Ontario minister of northern development and mines, has returned to the provincial cabinet fold, this time as minister of northern development. Premier David Peterson has split the former ministry of northern development and mines in the course of reconstructing his cabinet, and has appointed cabinet newcomer Sean Conway as minister of mines. Mr Conway also becomes government House leader.

Mr Peterson had himself carried the northern development and mines portfolio, since Mr Fontaine’s resignation.

Mr Fontaine also rejoins the policy and priorities board of cabinet, the group headed by Premier Peterson which sets directions for the government.
