The 1988 silver commemorative dollar from the Royal Canadian Mint salutes the 250th anniversary of the Quebec-based Saint-Maurice Ironworks, Canada’s first industrial refinery, which began operating in 1738 and stayed in business for over 100 years. This year’s coin honoring Saint-Maurice is the 23rd coin in the silver dollar series. It is 50 per cent fine silver, and sells for $20(C) for the “proof” version (frosted relief on brilliant background), at the Mint, at financial institutions, coin dealers and department stores across Canada.
