The new chairman of MILUS, or Mining Industry Land Use Strategy, is J.A. (Jack) Garnett. MILUS is a collective initiative of the Mining Association of Canada, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), and provincial and territorial mining associations and chambers of mines across Canada. It is administered and co-ordinated out of the PDAC’s Toronto office.
The ultimate goal of MILUS is to develop, through a broadly based consultative process, new mineral land management guidelines that will allow environmentally acceptable investigation and assessment of Canada’s mineral resource potential.
In the private sector, Garnett has worked as a geologist and engineer and lately as senior vice-president of administration for Seabright Resources (now Westminer Canada). In the public sector, he has worked at senior levels in provincial mines departments in British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Ontario.
During the last two years, Garnett worked as an independent mineral policy consultant, completing a number of short-term assignments in Africa, southeast Asia and Canada.
