The joint annual meeting of the Geological Association of Canada and the Mineralogical Association of Canada will be held at Memorial University in St. John’s, Nfld., from May 27 to 30, 2001.
The meeting will consist of four technical symposia, as well as 20 special sessions on such diverse topics as ocean drilling, high-pressure granulites, the geology of marine habitat, and data integration and preservation.
Also offered will be three short courses, two workshops and seven field trips.

The GAC-MAC meeting will be held in conjunction with the North Atlantic Minerals Symposium (NAMS), delegates to which are invited to participate in a 6-day field trip to explore the regional geology of the the Appalachian orogenic belt.
The symposium, which is concerned with the mineral resources and development potential of the North Atlantic, will address exploration, metallogeny, mineral economics, marketing, financing and future trends.
The first NAMS was held in Dublin in September 1999, and a third is scheduled for August 2003. The event is organized by the Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Geological Survey of Ireland in co-operation with the Irish Department of the Marine and Natural Resources.

Minex 2001, slated for March 20-23, 2001, in Perth, Australia, will include an international conference on mining issues.
Scheduled speakers include: Hugh Morgan, chief executive officer of WMC Resources; Shaun Stewart, Rio Tinto’s advisor on international and government affairs; and Ray Durrheim, program manager of DEEPMINE, a South African research project that could enable companies to mine gold at depths of 3,000-5,000 metres.
In addition to the usual exhibition, next year’s Minex will feature a presentation on global mining, encompassing Indonesia, Latin America, India, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia.
