Two French government agencies have held up permitting for the Camp Caiman gold project in French Guiana, forcing owner Cambior (CBJ-T, CBJ-X) back to the drawing board on its environmental impact plan.
A joint mission of the ministries of Industry and Environment reviewed public consultations and concluded that the environmental plan for the mine was deficient in two areas: cyanide discharge standards and impact on animal and plant species. The regulators recommended stricter mitigating measures.
Cambior has withdrawn its permit applications and will submit a revised plan. That will start the public-comment process over again. Cambior’s president Louis Gignac said in a release that he expected to have the revised plan by year-end.
