Franklin awarded top medal twice at GAC-MAC meeting

(Staff) — The Duncan R. Derry Medal — the highest award that can be bestowed on a geoscientist in Canada — was given here twice recently to Jim Franklin of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC).

The first presentation was by the Geological Association of Canada, and the second by the Mineralogical Association of Canada.

So far in his career, Franklin has had a hand in some 65 scientific papers. “The mining industry has to become more formal in how they tell us (the GSC) what research work they would like us to do,” Franklin said in his acceptance speech. “They do it now, but informally.”

Franklin said he strongly believes in the ability of Canadian geologists to find major new mines in Canada.
