Frank Beales, former professor of geology at the University of Toronto and McMaster University in Hamilton, has died. He was 85.
Born in the U.K., Beales spent his early days at Kingswood College in Lancashire and later at Cambridge University. During the Second World War, he served as a captain in the British army as part of the Newfoundlanders brigade.
He emigrated to Canada in 1948 and taught at McMaster (which he fondly referred to as “MixMaster”) while completing his PhD at the University of Toronto. He would later become a professor at the U of T. At the time of his passing, Beales remained a professor emeritus with the university’s geology department.
During his years at U of T, he was recognized internationally for his work on Mississippi Valley-type lead-zinc deposits.
Beals was known for his colourful talks, and the Association of Geology Graduates at the University of Toronto now presents the Frank Beales Award for the best annual talk, at its Friday afternoon sessions.
He is survived by his wife, Ruthie, and children Mary, Pattie, Alison, Jenna and Jason, as well as six granddaughters.
