Former Phelps Dodge chairman eighth recipient of AMC award

The former chairman of Phelps Dodge was named the eighth recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the American Mining Congress (AMC).

George Munroe will be presented with the award at the Jan. 31 AMC annual members meeting in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes distinguished service to the mining, metallurgical and/or mineral processing industries. Munroe is an AMC vice-chairman and director.

Munroe, who joined Phelps Dodge in 1958, became that company’s president in 1966, chief executive officer in 1969 and chairman in 1975. He retired as chairman in 1987 but continues to serve as a director of the company.
