Jim Gill and Howard Stockford are among the mining executives whose accomplishments are being recognized this year at the Prospectors and Developers Association’s annual convention in Toronto this week. The Aur Resources president and vice-president, whose names are synonymous with a large base metal discovery in Val d’Or, Que., will receive the Bill Dennis Prospector of the Year award at a March 12 banquet in the Royal York Hotel.
On hand to present the award will be Newfoundland and Labrador Energy and Mines Minister Rex Gibbons who will also distribute awards to Corona Corp. Chairman Ned Goodman, Teck Corp. Chairman Norman Keevil Jr. and Professor Harry Warren.
The grandson of J.E. Gill, the well-known professor of geology, Gill graduated from Carleton University with a Ph.D. in economic geology, 1977.
Born in England, Stockford studied mining geology at the Royal School of Mines before graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1962. He was hired as regional exploration manager for Falconbridge Ltd. Stockford later became Falconbridge’s chief geologist before he joined Aur in 1983.
For his role in building Corona from a small gold miner to one of the top producers in North America, Goodman will receive this year’s Developers Award.
The award for Distinguished Ser 0600,0000 vice this year is going to Keevil and Warren. The PDAC said it is honoring Keevil for his exemplary and dedicated leadership of a major mining group which has been de scribed as “an innovator, a discoverer, a producer and a company with integrity.”
In 28 years with Teck Corp., Keevil has worked as the company’s vice-president of exploration, director, president and chief executive officer and lately as chairman.
