Five workers have died in an accident at
The miners were killed after water burst from an underground piping system in a tunnel used to haul ore from an open pit to a processing plant. The subsequent deluge forced Anglo to shut down the area and invoke emergency measures.
The workers were employed by a local Chilean contractor used by Anglo American. The accident halted transport of ore at the mine, but the processing plant will continue to operate by using stockpiled ore.
A company spokesman says the accident is not likely to affect copper production. Last year, El Soldado produced 64,000 tonnes copper.
Anglo American reported pretax profits of US$1.3 billion for the first half of 2004 on the back of spiralling prices for copper, nickel and zinc.
