Five B.C. mines win reclamation awards

Five British Columbia mines were presented with awards for outstanding achievement in mine reclamation programs at the 19th annual mine reclamation symposium held recently in Dawson Creek.

The top spot went to Homestake Canada, which was presented with the Provincial Mine Reclamation Award by British Columbia Mines Minister Anne Edwards.

Other winners were Equity Silver Mines (Metal Mining Citation), Fording Coal (Coal Mining), West Coast Aggregates (Sand and Gravel) and Placer Dome Canada (Mineral Exploration).

The companies were recognized for their efforts in controlling acid rock drainage, returning mine land to forestry and wildlife habitat, and minimizing exploration disturbances in populated areas.

The symposium also included sessions on high-elevation reclamation, soils and vegetation, oil and gas reclamation, and water quality. Field trips to the Quintette and Bullmoose coal mines rounded out the program.
