A reverse-circulation (RC) drilling program by First Quantum Minerals (FM-T, FQVLF-O, FQM-L) has intersected copper mineralization on two prospects at the Kibamba property in central Katanga province, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
A 2,430-metre RC program at the RSF prospect intersected copper mineralization in 16 of 25 holes, mostly over drill intervals of 20 to 80 metres. Copper grades were mainly in the range 0.4% to 1.2%, though one 80-metre intersection ran 2.2% copper. Most intersections showed cobalt grades between 0.03% and 0.15%, with some above 0.2%.
The mineralization is in oxidized rock and high percentages of both copper and cobalt are acid-soluble.
Results from nine diamond drill holes on RSF are not yet available.
Three RC holes on the Subo prospect, 2 km south of RSF, also intersected significant widths of copper-cobalt mineralization. The longest intersection was a 74-metre interval that averaged 0.68% copper and 0.02% cobalt.
Both prospects were discovered through ground follow-ups on airborne radiometric and magnetic surveys and reconnaissance soil geochemistry.
Kibamba is about 75 km west of Likasi, on the Congolese copper belt.
