First feed at Omai gold mine

First feed for the mill at the new open-pit Omai gold mine in Guyana was received Dec. 15, owners Cambior (TSE) and Golden Star Resources (TSE) report.

Tonnage milled will be increased progressively and should reach commercial production level by January, the companies say.

Plans call for increasing the daily production rate from 11,800 tons during the first quarter to 15,500 tons during the second half of 1993. The companies project total gold production for 1993 of 280,000 oz. Cambior is the project operator and majority owner.

The mine is about 100 miles inland from Georgetown, capital of the South American country.
