Filmon promises aid for Hud Bay project

Canada’s third-largest copper producer needs to spend $130 million on a smelter upgrading program in order to meet stricter federal-provincial sulphur dioxide emission standards, slated to take effect in 1992.

President Lloyd Nilsen refused to comment on negotiations that have been in the formal discussion stage since the beginning of this year.

But according to Filmon, negotiations involving the federal and provincial departments of Energy and Mines are continuing and the province is prep ared to cont ribute its share.

Hudson Bay is planning to invest $43.5 million to upgrade its Flin Flon smelter while the federal and provincial governments are being asked to contribute sim ilar amounts in the form of loans to the company.

To reduce its sulphur dioxide emissions by 25% by 1994, Hudson Bay says it will install in its copper smelter a zinc pressure leaching system and a Noranda co nverter. Installation is expected to take two years to complete.
