Fasken Martineau Heads To Paris

Quebec-based international business law and litigation heavy-hitters, Fasken Martineau, has announced plans to merge with Parisian counterparts Gravel, Leclerc & Partners.

The merger news was quickly followed by expansions to Fasken’s teams worldwide, including the addition of four new lawyers to the Paris team from locally-based Dewey & LeBoeuf.

“The expansion into Paris is a bold move, but our business instincts tell us it’s the right decision for our clients and for our firm,” said Raymond Chrtien, a strategic advisor to Fasken Martineau, a former Canadian embassador and a nephew to former prime minister Jean Chretien. “Paris is one of the world’s top cities for international business transactions and arbitrations, and it’s a gateway into business in francophone Africa.”

To head up Fasken’s legal team in Paris, the company has enlisted high-profile mining lawyer Jean- Claude Petilon, from Dewey & LeBoeuf.

“Jean-Claude Petilon is known as ‘Mr. Africa’ in France and is recognized internationally as a leading mining and energy lawyer,” said David Corbett, firm managing partner of Fasken, in a press release. “Our clients will benefit from the legal expertise he and his team offer and from their experience in Europe and throughout Africa. The Paris team will complement our existing team on the ground in Johannesburg, which has been serving clients in Africa’s francophone and anglophone countries for more than six years.”

In addition to Petilon, the company has hired Elizabeth Terron, Liliane Doukoure, Matthieu Adam, Serge Gravel, Ginette Leclerc, Jerome Richardot, Anne Granger, Julia Kalfon, Ghjuvana Luiji and Jean-Charles Bancal.

Fasken has offices worldwide, including Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, London, Paris and Johannesburg. It employs over 650 lawyers.
