Falconbridge, workers reach contract deal

Falconbridge has come to a new contract agreement with 1,400 striking production and maintenance workers at its mining and smelting operation in Sudbury, Ont.

Employees had been on strike since Aug. 1, following a contract dispute with the company. The agreement includes provisions for increased wages, a guaranteed pension for eligible employees and improved benefits packages. The new contract, which will last until Aug. 1, 2000, was ratified by 80% of the members of the Canadian Auto Workers/Mine-Mill Local 598.

Production at the nickel-copper operations, which include the Onaping-Craig, Fraser, Lindsley, Lockerby and Strathcona underground mines, was expected to have resumed at full capacity by presstime. The smelter there, however, will remain inactive until maintenance work has been completed.
