Falco to construct new SO2 plant

A liquid sulpher dioxide plant will be built at the Kidd Creek mine in Timmins, Ont., following an agreement between Falconbridge and Masulex, a major supplier of SO2 and sulphuric acid.

Under the agreement, the two companies will enter a partnership to construct the plant. Scheduled for completion by mid-1992, the facility is expected to have a capacity of 30,000 tonnes per year.

A portion of the SO2 gas from the existing copper smelter at Timmins, Ont., which is currently used to produce sulphuric acid, will be used at the new facility.
