Falco fined for violation

Falconbridge was fined $225,000 after a safety violation resulted in the death of an employee at the Kidd Creek mine in September 2000, in Timmins, Ont.

The Ontario Ministry of Labour says the worker was killed while using a torch to cut a bolt from a coupling on an air pipe. The elevated air pressure inside the pipe caused it to explode.

The worker was taken to hospital with a severe head injury and died five days later.

Falconbridge pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that pressure in the air pipeline system was reduced to atmospheric pressure.
