Explosion at PT Inco smelter kills six

Six men were killed and four injured in an explosion at PT International Nickel Indonesia’s nickel smelter at Soroako, Indonesia. PT Inco is a subsidiary of Toronto- based Inco (TSE). Inco believes a water leak resulting from an electrical problem at one of the three electric furnaces was the cause of the explosion. The full extent of the damage and its effect on production is not yet known.

The smelter was down for repairs and tie-in work when the explosion occurred. An investigation of the accident is under way.
