Drilling by Noranda Exploration, a subsidiary of Noranda (TSE), is under way at the Whistle Lake property, about 80 miles north of Thunder Bay, Ont.
The property, which is held equally by International Vestor Resources (VSE) and Cumberland Resources (VSE), covers a felsic volcanic belt 9 miles long that is considered geologically conducive to the occurrence of copper-zinc massive sulphides.
Boulders of mineralization were previously found on surface, which are anomalous in copper, zinc and silver, with values of up to 2.6% zinc, 0.78% copper and 1 oz. silver per ton. The presence of massive sulphide-type alteration in the felsic volcanic rocks is providing further encouragement for the partners.
Noranda can earn a half-interest in 4,700 acres in the western sector of the property by making $140,000 in option payments and spending $750,000 on exploration over four years.
The initial drilling will total 2,300 ft. and test four geophysical anomalies, each with a single hole.
Geophysical work is in progress on the rest of the property (6,300 acres), which is not subject to the Noranda option. This program is aimed at defining targets for eventual drilling.
