Consolidated Gold Fields of London, England conducts exploration in North America through two wholly-owned subsidiaries — Gold Fields Canadian Mining in Canada and Gold Fields Mining Corp. in the U.S. According to a company spokesman, the Gold Fields group has earned a reputation for sound and aggressive exploration ranging from grassroots programs to the acquisition of reserves in the ground. A blend of traditional and innovative techniques tailored to each target is commonly applied. But as a matter of policy, drilling is emphasized at an early stage. Canadian exploration activities concentrate on the search for precious metal deposits in eastern Canada, although a number of interesting properties in British Columbia are also being considered. The Canadian programs are run by Derek Bartlett, manager of Canadian exploration; Wayne Ewert is manager of new projects. Recently, a regional office was established in Timmins, Ont. William Waychison, regional manager, is responsible for exploration activities from this office. During the past decade, the Gold Fields group has mounted a successful precious metal exploration effort in North America. Most of that effort has been spent in the U.S., where two major mines, Mesquite in California and Chimney Creek in Nevada, have recently been brought into production.
