Evert Ross

Evert Ross, one of the pioneer mining contractors in northwestern Quebec, and the founder of Evert Ross Ltd., of Val d’Or (now Ross-Finlay Ltd.), has died at the age of 83.

An emigrant from Sweden in the early 1920s, Mr Ross worked at various surface and underground jobs at Noranda Mines for some five years, then was hired as a shift boss for Miners’ Inc. at the newly- w Ross-Finlay Ltd.), has died at the age of 83.

An emigrant from Sweden in the early 1920s, Mr Ross worked at various surface and underground jobs at Noranda Mines for some five years, then was hired as a shift boss for Miners’ Inc. at the newly- opened Perron mine, near Val d’Or.

He founded Evert Ross Ltd. in 1952, after managing several contracts in various parts of the country for Miners’ Inc. His first Evert Ross contract was to sink a 500-ft shaft for Bevcourt Gold Mines, later Bevcon Gold Mines.

In 1962, Mr Ross joined with several key company personnel to form Evert Ross and Associates, by then the largest mining contractor in the province of Quebec.

He retired in 1968, though continued to lead an active community life. He is survived by his wife Therese, two stepchildren, David and Marie-Therese, and one grandchild.
