Eritrea, a newly independent African country on the Red Sea, holds solid potential for mineral deposits, according to a report by R. Rumbold et Associes.
“Almost the whole of the country consists of Precambrian-age igneous and metamorphic rocks and a number of mineral occurrences have been noted, but of these, gold is by far the most important,” Rumbold notes.
About 15 old gold mines (mostly auriferous quartz reefs) are known to have been worked near the capital of Asmara. Some are completely mined out, but because no systematic exploration has occurred recently, “the potential for new discoveries must be considered good,” the report states. Another region of widespread gold mineralization is near Barentu, about 150 km west of Asmara.
Rumbold is working on a report which assesses all geological data on gold potential.
