ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD for Mine Doyon

La Mine Doyon in northwestern Quebec recently won an award for environmental protection at the eighth annual Mercuriades competition in Montreal.

Organized by the Quebec Chamber of Commerce, the Mercuriades awards, named after the ancient Roman god of commerce, are given to companies operating in the province for excellence in 17 different business categories, including job creation, quality of work life, new enterprise and exceptional manufacturing performance.

The Mercure award for environmental protection is awarded to the business demonstrating exceptional performance in providing or improving the quality of its physical environment. La Mine Doyon, Canada’s largest open pit gold mine which is making the transition to an underground mine, is owned jointly by Lac Minerals and Cambior Inc. The mine produced 215,000 oz of gold in 1986 and is targeted to produce 230,000 oz this year.
