EMR signs agreement with Mexico

Canada and Mexico recently signed an agreement to develop ties between the mineral industries in both countries.

Under the new pact, Canadian and Mexican organizations can exchange experts and information on implementation of mining policies.

“This will allow us to take advantage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and anticipated Mexican economic growth,” says Bill McKnight, federal minister of Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR). “It will also help us contribute to the competitive potential of Canadian industry.” McKnight and Mexico’s Energy Secretary Emilio Lozoya Thalmann signed a memorandum of understanding on the first day of a 2-day meeting of the Ninth Joint Ministerial Committee.

This is the first such agreement that Mexico has signed with any nation. Canada has similar arrangements with the U.S., China, Korea and the European Community, among

others.

Mexico is Canada’s largest trading partner in Latin America. Two-way trade totalled more than $600 million in the first 10 months of 1992.
