Emergency rule declared in Peru

The South American nation of Peru, a major silver producer, was under a state of emergency rule after a decade of democratization as this Latin American issue went to press.

The countrys military and President Alberto Fujimori moved to close media outlets and detain opposition figures following suspension of the constitution. The development was condemned by some as a coup, an idea rejected by Fujimori.

The military ruled Peru from 1968 to 1980.
