The mines minister of British Columbia is optimistic the mining industry will continue to provide career opportunities for young people.
“We have, and will continue to have, good jobs in the industry — ones that are rewarding, well paying and highly skilled,” Anne Edwards said in response to reports that publicity about the industry’s problems are discouraging students.
Edwards said the province’s mining industry employs 14,000 persons directly and is worth $3.6 billion annually.
Edwards pointed out that British Columbia’s Pacific Rim exposure will provide increasing opportunities for persons based in the province working in the areas of mining technology, geology, the environment, computers and map-making.
