EDITORIAL PAGE — Those not-so-nice Canadians

What is happening to those nice Canadians? We used to be famous around the world as the kind and gentle nation that knew its place in the bigger scheme of things. And as the media pundits see it, we’ve put this hard-earned reputation at risk for the thrill of a chase on the high seas to save a fish that not even Brigitte Bardot could love.

And what were those out-of-work sealers on the Magdalene Islands thinking when they gave the heave-ho to Paul Watson and his entourage of Hollywood Greenpeacers? Granted, they may have had trouble picturing themselves knitting sweaters from the hair Watson suggests they collect from moulting baby seals, but where were their manners?

That about sums up the attitude of some media pundits, who are now worrying aloud that we are becoming “Americanized” and taking up our southern neighbor’s “in your face” style of activism. Perhaps it isn’t true that nice guys finish last!
