Sports teams in North America have had unusual nicknames, some more memorable than others and some even evoking images of mining. A professional basketball team, for example, is known as the Nuggets, and now there is a pro football team that will carry the name Gold Miners.
The team is one of the new entries into the Canadian Football League, and the owners of the Sacramento Gold Miners chose to promote the community’s mining heritage. Located in California’s Mother Lode country, Sacramento, the state capital, was at the centre of a major gold rush in the mid-1800s. Mining is a risky business, but then so is the game of football (both on and off the field). Here’s to a bright future for the Gold Miners, and for miners in general everywhere.
