But prospectors and field geologists will be discouraged to hear that all is not well in the fight against the forces of bugdom. After eight years of research, the Canadian Biting Fly Centre at the University of Manitoba is closing its doors.
Over the years, the centre attracted more than $1 million in research funding from various sources. The largest research contracts came from Agriculture Canada, but the centre also did work on several other projects, including evaluation of repellents and non-chemical control of black flies and mosquitoes for the Department of National Defence.
Since 1987, however, Agriculture Canada has ended its research contracts. As a result, the centre will cease to exist. Those who spend any time at all in the bush will mourn its passing.
