Editorial Good pay in mining

Productivity improvements in the mining industry over the past decade has proven to be a mixed blessing for its workers. According to a report from Statistics Canada, mine workers were among the highest paid in the country’s workforce. The average pay for miners, along with quarry workers and workers in the oil wells sector, was $843 a week. The average wage in Canada is $497 a week.

Workers in the Northwest Territories were the highest paid in the country averaging $671 a week. Because mining provides a greater proportion of total jobs in the territories than in any other jurisdiction, it is safe to say that the mining industry was a major factor in keeping wages at that level.

On the other hand, the report shows that there was a 6.5% decrease in the year-over-year employment levels in mines, quarries and oil wells, the greatest decrease in any of the sectors established by the federal agency.
