Can you read anything of much significance to the mining industry in the fact that a miner’s lamp has helped start the Olympic torch on its long journey to Calgary, site next February of the 15th Winter Olympics?
Probably not, other than that the lamp served as a useful, practical way of transporting the undying flame by air from Greece, birthplace of the Olympics, to St. John’s , Nfld. From St. John’s, the torch has now begun its journey to Calgary via 7,300 relay runners, as well as by snowmobilers and skiers.
And yet…..and yet. The 1988 Winter Olympics will be a major event in Canada, and, if nothing else, use of the miner’s lamp (recorded in numerous press reports) has at least helped focus some attention on an industry that has a great Canadian tradition, (and a world reputation) in the same way that the Olympics has developed a great international tradition.
We’re glad of the link, however small.
