It’s not often, in Canada, that political leaders even mention mining let alone consider the industry, one which might contribute a plank to their election platform. Not so in the U.S. At a recent convention in Atlanta, Ga., the Democratic Party recently nominated Michael Dukakis as its candidate for the U.S. presidency and adopted an election platform that makes several references to the mining industry. For example:
— “We believe…in an economy that is prosperous in every region….including our rural town, our older industrial communities, our mining towns and our energy producing areas.”
— “We believe that the time has come for America”………to reverse policies that have permitted “the decline of our industrial, natural resource and mining base.”
Pretty innocuous references, to be sure. Nevertheless, with an election just around the corner here in Canada, it would be nice to at least some similar reference to this most basic of industries.
