In particular, Inco gets the nod for a $4-million gesture that seems to have stirred little interest outside of the company’s Sudbury base of operations.
Inco had appealed a tax assessment levied by Sudbury Region, a municipal level of government one step above the city. Inco paid the assessment while the dispute was heard, but the courts eventually upheld Inco’s appeal. The result was that the regional government owed the company $4,164,000.
But Inco, saying it believes in a strong Sudbury Region, waived the tax refund, in effect donating $4 million to the local government. Inco Chairman Donald Phillips said the donation “is, in our way, a measure of thanks for the support shown us over the years.”
Sudbury Region Chairman Tom Davies called the gesture by Inco an “outstanding act of corporate citizenshi ”
