You don’t hear any of this, though. Such pronouncements would have been appropriate as a new year dawns. It would have been fitting to look back at past achievements, at the 32 new mines the country’s industry nurtured to economic life in 1987 and 1988. It would have been right and proper to ponder the coming year when, by our estimate, another 20 or so gold and base metal producers will join the nation’s rollcall of mines and add to the export earnings of a free-trading nation. But no, you hear none of this from the spokesmen of our industry. Modesty, I suppose, dictates silence.

Well I won’t let the cat out of the bag.
