Eden Roc Mineral (EDN-T) is suspending operations at its 68%-owned Afema gold mine in Ivory Coast as a result of depleted oxide reserves.
Eden Roc has already halted mining, though leaching of stockpiled low-grade ore will continue until April. The company says the mine’s working capital will be sufficient to cover the costs associated with the shutdown.
The company says it will continue to test deep-lying sulphide zones at the Junction zone, where up to 10.4 metres grading 11.5 grams gold per tonne (including 4.4 metres of 21.43 grams) were returned in previous drilling. As well, two geophysical anomalies to the north and south and a 6-km-long soil geochemical anomaly in the Niamienlessa area, 15 km to the northeast, will be evaluated.
The Afema mine, in which mineralization is associated with the shear zone of the same name, produced 25,805 oz. gold in the first nine months of 1997.
The mine is expected to yield an additional 7,195 oz. gold in the fourth quarter.
