“This is the same sequence of rocks and chemistry as in the Timmins camp,” Middleton explained to The Northern Miner. In Timmins, the Destor Porcupine fault is associated with a string of gold mines that produced more than 50 million oz of gold since the early 1900s.
Towards the west, the fault — which is a major structural feature striking across northern Ontario — has seen little exploration relative to the amount performed in the main Timmins camp. “No one ever found the western extension of the Timmins camp,” Middleton says. “It horsetails a bit but it’s the same system.” Exploration in the area was precluded by a lack of rivers or lakes – – access routes used by prospectors to enter areas for exploration. The result was that prospectors, who swarmed towards Timmins in the early 1900s, generally by-passed the lands to the west. “Only in the last five years have logging roads opened up the area,” Middleton explained.
The ground, which is held by Tarzan Gold (ASE), Glen Auden Resources (TSE) and Goldrock Resources has also attracted the attention of American Barrick Resources (TSE). Barrick can earn a 50% interest in the eastern section of the land package by spending $1.5 million on exploration. A budget of $250,000 has been set for this summer’s program.
Glen Auden and Goldrock, the property vendors, staked 640 claims across Penhorwood, Sewell and Reeves twps. which protects a section of the Destor-Porcupine. Several gold showings are known to exist on the claims.
Immediately west of the Barrick- optioned property, Tarzan and Glen Auden control 156 claims. The next property to the west is the Joburke, which Tarzan optioned from Noranda in 1988.
The Joburke project is Tarzan’s most advanced. A former producer, Pamour took out 440,117 tons grading 0.11 oz gold per ton from an open pit operation in the 1970s. The deposit was also developed by a shaft with the deepest level at 375 ft.
Work by Tarzan identified the 6-7 zone further along strike from the main north zone. However surface trenching and sampling now suggests both zones are the same, Middleton says. Tarzan’s work has identified geological reserves of about 600,000 tons to 600 ft, Middleton added. “The potential is there for one million tons.”
