Drilling is under way on Greenstone Resources’ Gwillim gold mine property in the Chibougamau area of Quebec, President Ian Park reports.
The drilling is being undertaken by Flanagan McAdam Resources and Muscocho Explorations; each company may earn a 25% interest in the property by spending a combined $2 million within three years.
The first drill target is the kod zone, with drilling on other zones to follow. The Gwillim produced gold from 1980 to 1984 but the mine ceased operations because of a lack of developed ore reserves.
Flanagan President John McAdam reports high gold values have been intersected in the initial drill hole of the program designed to investigate the eastward extension of the kod zone.
A 38.1-ft core length in Hole kod-1-87 averaged 0.38 oz gold per ton, Mr McAdam reports. This section, which started at 509 ft in the hole (approximately 445 ft vertical), included 15.5 ft averaging 0.81 oz, with some individual sections assaying 1.64 oz over 1.4 ft, 3.17 oz over 1.9 ft and 1.5 oz over 2 ft.
The kod zone is separate from the area of previous production, and was subject to limited drilling by previous operators. The current drilling is investigating the area lying to the immediate east of previous drilling, and is based on new structural interpretations, Mr McAdam reports.
A decline ramp was started by previous operators but was halted at 560 ft, several hundred feet short of the main gold-bearing structures within the zone. Current plans call for continuation of the ramp to gain access to the gold zones at a vertical depth of 200 ft where exploratory drilling will be carried out.
The Gwillim property adjoins the mop 2 gold project, where exploration work is being carried out by a joint venture involving Muscocho, Flanagan and Noranda Explorations.
