Driller buys subsidiary — Boart also cited for safety record

North Bay, Ont.-based diamond driller Boart Longyear has acquired a 74% interest in Geoserv Pesquisas Geologicas, a drilling company based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The new company, called Boart Longyear Geoserv, will operate 15 drill rigs throughout the country.

In other news, for the second year running, Boart Longyear and its

N. Morissette division have received the 1996 Award of Excellence for Diamond Drill Contractors from the Ontario Natural Resources Safety Association.

The award is given to mining-related companies, in various categories, which record no fatalities and the lowest number of injuries requiring medical attention.

Winners in other categories included Sifto Canada’s salt mine in Goderich (underground mine of fewer than 1,000 employees), Falconbridge’s Kidd Creek mine in Timmins (underground mine of more than 1,000 employees), Aurora Quarrying (mining contractor) and the open-pit talc operation of Luzenac in Timmins (open-pit mine).
