This letter is in regard to the letter to the editor titled “DRC insists Afton economic” (T.N.M., Dec. 4/00). The letter was submitted by Steven Lightburn [advisor to DRC] as his personal opinion of the project and is not an official statement from the management of DRC Resources Corp.
The company would like to clarify that this letter was not approved by the board of directors of DRC Resources. The company also stresses that Mr. Lightburn does not speak for DRC Resources or on behalf of its board of directors.

I have always been a skeptic about global warming, and the science behind it. There was simply too much money to be had researching the subject and coming up with conclusions that inevitably said that the potential seriousness of the problem demanded more research. This is to say nothing of the political power and money-raising opportunities for environmental groups.
That being said, it would be strange indeed if we could take a goodly percentage of the carbon that has been locked up in fossil fuels over hundreds of millions of years and spew it out into the atmosphere over a geological split-second of about 300 years without there being some sort of effect.
Research has found that climate change appears to build up slowly, and then, after a theoretical trigger point is reached, it proceeds extremely rapidly. An ice age, for example, may start in as little as 10 or 20 years, and end just as rapidly. If this turns out to be correct, what is going to happen will likely happen anyway, despite our best efforts to prevent it by modifying our behaviour.
Consequently, I agree with your conclusion that we should use our resources to correct the immediate pollution problems that we face, and not squander them on hare-brained schemes to “save the world.”
