On May 28, visitors will have a chance to tour the Mining Building at the University of Toronto during Doors Open Toronto, an event that allows people access to city buildings that would otherwise be off limits.
The Mining Building (originally the Chemistry and Mining Building) was part of the U of T’s Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, formerly known as the School of Practical Science. It was designed F.R. Heakes and constructed of stone and pressed brick.
Since it opened in 1904, the building has been home to mining, mineral, and geological education at the university. Today it hosts not only mineral engineering but the Lassonde Institute for Engineering Geoscience, the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, and offices and laboratories of the departments of mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering.
The building is also home to the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. Visitors will find plaques of polished Canadian granite with photos and descriptions of the members lining the walls of the hall, and historical photographs of mining education.
